Neck Pain Relief with a Simple Stretch

Do you ever wake up and just feel like you slept wrong?  Like your neck was in some crazy unnatural position all night, or maybe the cat was dancing on your head?

And then you’re super careful all day, making no sudden movements lest you tweak a muscle and make your whole neck spasm.  It’s all good as long as you don’t do anything crazy, like, oh, say, turn your head, right?

Yeah, that’s not really a good way to spend your day.  At the very least, you’re going to be terrifying every other driver on the road when you change lanes without looking to see if there’s a car in the way.

So, let’s get that fixed, shall we?  Give this simple neck stretch a try.  This video shows you one run through of a three part stretch, but you can do each part up to three times, so if your neck is really stiff, wash, rinse and repeat.  Preferably daily.  Your neck will thank you.

So funny short story… I was at the gym the other day and during one of the exercises I tweaked something in the back of my neck. It hurt a little bit but I could tell I would be paying for it later. By the end of the night it was like I’d slept on it wrong for four years straight and my new natural head position resembelmed something along the lines of a chicken’s or a giraffes. Ouch.

Fast forward to an hour ago… I’m checking my email and woah-and-behold, Suxie Baxter to the rescue! I just finished doing the stretches and felt immediate improvement in my range of motion and a reduction in the soreness/pain. I will sleep pain-free tonight!

Thank you Suxie for hearing my cries of help and answering them in such a timely manner. 😉

Stretching (in general) is a great way to maintain a healthy neck…and these are helpful, easy-to-follow stretches.

If you are waking up with a “stiff” neck, this is usually due to restricted blood flow to the muscles and/or nerves. So, I recommend doing activities that help get the blood moving first [ie hot shower] then gently stretch.

Another helpful tip to help reduce pain from a stiff neck is slow, steady compression. Lie on a tennis ball and wait 10-15 sec until the pain dissipates.
